Cholesterol is a soft like waxy fat thriving with plasma cell in our blood stream. We need Cholesterol to keep us healthy. Many people have the understanding that Cholesterol is bad for health. In actual fact, we need it to keep your body function properly. Without it, our body will be in chaos, our brain would not be working, Nerves and Reflexes would not function properly, Blood would not flow and many other bodily functions will down too.

 

Cholesterol is needed in our body to produce cell membranes, hormones and electrolytes agent. In fact a major of our brain consist of Cholesterol and blood vessels. High Cholesterol Level in our blood system which is called Hypercholesterolemia will eventually lead to major risk for coronary heart disease and stroke.

 

Good and Bad Cholesterol

 

Cholesterol is divided into the good and the bad. The Good ones is called High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and the bad ones called Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL).

 

High Density Lipoprotein uses:

  • protects the arteries from atherosclerosis process: the HDL extracts the bad LDL from the wall of arteries and transport them to the liver for disposal.

  • prevents more LDL from building up on the wall of the arteries

  • higher level of HDL cholesterol in the blood stream relates to lower possibilities of heart attack and stroke.

How to increase HDL Level and decrease LDL Level in our body:

  • practice good lifestyles. Exercise regularly.

  • control diet: reduce sugar, reduce weight, reduce trans fat intake, cut down on fast food

  • quit smoking

  • mild alcohol consumption - only 1 cup a day but it is not recommended by most medical practitioners due to the hazard if taken beyond the first cup

  • take fish cholesterol: good HDL cholesterol comes from cold water fish like tuna, salmon and cod fish.

How Much Cholesterol is Needed?

  • ideal amount is every 1 part of HDL for 4-5 parts of LDL. The lesser LDL the better.
