How To Use Dry Powder Inhaler Effectively?

 

Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) is a device that delivers powder medication to the lungs. DPIs are used to treat respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

 

Dry Powder Inhaler is an alternative to the metered dose inhaler which uses a propellant to deliver the medication into the lungs. The medication in the DPI is held in a measured dosage of the drug capsule before it is being sucked into the lungs.

 

DPI is also called breath actuated inhaler should be used as follow although some brands may differ a little in their usage.

 

Techniques to use the Dry Powder Inhaler:

  • unlike the MDI, this dry powder inhaler must not be shaken prior to be inhaled

  • check the mouth piece which suppose to be clear from foreign objects

  • load the prescribed medication into the inhaler using the accompanying instruction

  • stay seated or standing straight with good support by leaning towards the wall at your back

  • your head should tilt up slightly

  • get ready the inhaler

  • breathe out your last breath

  • quickly bring the inhaler and secure the mouth piece into your mouth and close your mouth around the mouth piece

  • breathe in one quick and deep breath

  • remove the inhaler from your mouth

  • hold your breath for as long as you can or at least for 10 seconds.

  • breathe out very slowly

  • wait for another minute if you need to take a second dose as prescribed by the doctor.

  • otherwise rinse your mouth and brush your teeth

Some dry powder inhalers come with a spacer to extend the mouth piece right up near your throat. This is a good way to ensure the inhaled drug do not come to contact with your mouth as much as possible.

 

DPI is usually not the good choice for most people because it is not as user friendly as MDI. This inhaler requires some precision and some skill to make the inhalation complete.
