How Do Asthma Drugs Work In Our Human Body?

There are basically 2 main types of medications that are being used to treat Asthma. The Asthma Drugs are used to subdue the inflammation in the airways and help to relax the smooth muscle. Currently there are no known cure medication for asthma.

Asthma Drugs are broken down to 2 major group:

  1. Anti Inflammatory Drugs

    • this drug is used to reverse the inflammation of the airways

    • the drug is used as a substitute as adrenoceptors. Adrenoceptors are the right combination of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the airways to relax the smooth muscle.

    • without inflammation, there will be less mucus stuck on the airways which will help to breath better

    • one of the well know asthma anti inflammation drug is Corticosteroids. They are effective in bringing severe inflammation under control instantly and also good at managing against flare-up which is also called exacerbation of asthma

  2. Bronchodilators Drugs

    • this drug is used to open up the airways by acting as the natural noradrenaline in the bronchi. They are the same adrenoceptors that the right combination of noradrenaline and adrenaline would be on the airways of the smooth muscle cells. The main focus is to relax smooth muscle.

    • they are considered an agonists: a drug that binds to a receptor and produces the same effect as in the natural body would have reacted.

    • the antagonist is the drug that block the over excess of noradrenaline in the airways.

  3. Tablet Drugs

    • newly developed medication such as montelukast in tablet form. It works by blocking the inflammatory mediator leukotriene. This medication is also know as Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist.

The Asthma Drugs development has made asthmatic patients to go through life on the easier note. Asthma attack has become less painful and the time taken to subdue the inflammation has been shorten. Life threatening situation has also been reduced drastically in the last 20 years.

However up to now in 2010, there are still not known asthma drug or vaccine to prevent asthma.
