What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term to describe inflammation in the joints. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. It mainly affect women and elderly. According to research, 1 in 5 of Australians suffer from arthritis.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disorder whereby a person's immune system attacks his or her own synovial membrane lining the joints. As a result, inflammation occurs causing pain, swelling and stiffness in the morning.

It affects more women than man especially between ages of 25 and 50 but can begin at any age. Chronic problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, lumbago are all forms of RA.

Diagnosis for Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Blood test - Rheumatoid Arthritis Factor is present in 80% of the people with Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • ESR ( erythrocyte sedimentation rate )- to give the clue about the level of inflammation

  • X-ray - to check extent of damage to the bones or cartilage

Rheumatoid Arthritis Management

Pharmacological medication. Painkillers (NSAID) and Steroids prescription provides temporary relief but plenty of adverse side effects to contend with.
